Why is gas refill or top-up important in an AC?

Lack of coolant (Freon) is a very common reason behind AC not cooling problem. The coolant circulates through the evaporator coils and cools the air flowing over it and eventually sends cool air into the room. So when the level of this coolant becomes insufficient, the AC fails to cool. In many cases the coolant leaks from the unit and AC stops cooling. An AC repair professional will be able to accurately determine if the refrigerant level is just right in the cooling coils.

What is included in AC gas refill service?

The PRO accurately determine the coolant level in the AC unit using a pressure gauge. If the level of gas, also called refrigerant is found below the normal PRO suggests a refill or top-up as per requirement.

To start the coolant recharge, first the AC unit is shut down. Thereafter the gauge hoses are attached to the pressure port of AC unit. The AC unit is then turned on and allowed to run for 10 min so that it can reach a stable state of operation. Following it the valves of the refrigerant container (with container in the upright position) is connected to the AC unit. Now the AC unit is ready to draw coolant.

Important guidelines for AC gas refill or top up

Before the gas refill starts, it is always advised to check if the air filters are clean and evaporator/ condenser coils are dirt free. If any of the above are dirty, it can lead to AC not cooling problem even after coolant recharge.

Check for any problematic situation inside the AC unit like obstructions inside AC unit (e.g. loose or broken parts).

Make sure that evaporator fan and condenser fan work fine. If any of them fail to work properly, AC will not cool efficiently.

Conduct a thorough inspection of the AC unit and check for any leakage in the coils. Leaks are typically found around joints and connections.

Type of Gas Available for Top Up for Recharge:

In the past, Freon was the preferred type of gas used as coolants in air-conditioning units around the world. In the past, Freon was the preferred type of gas used as coolants in air-conditioning units around the world.

The R22 Gas used in air-conditioners is are classified as HCFC (hydrochlorofluorocarbon) a type of chemical that when released to the environment will affect the ozone layer of the atmosphere. Its use is now being phased out all over the world with a few countries instituting a total ban for the use of this gas in the manufacturing of air-conditioning units.

R410 is the newest refrigerant being used by air-conditioner manufacturers. Puron is the most popular brand name for this chemical. Cooling efficiency is like the R22 refrigerant but is not hazardous when it gets exposed to the environment.

R32 refrigerant is also known as difluoromethane and belongs to the HFC family of refrigerant. This gas is poised to replace the other gaseous such as R-410A and R-407C as the preferred gas due to its lower Global Warming Potential. Its chemical formula is CH2F2.

Quick Fact of AC Gas filling:

An air-conditioning system relies on a refrigerant, either in liquid or gas form, to cool the air that is distributed throughout a room or space. It's vital to refill the AC gas when it's low to make sure your AC system running smoothly.

It's also recommended to get the AC system serviced regularly to keep it working efficiently.
